I’m Josef Hodgkins, a PhD student in Nursing Science, registered nurse (RN), and commissioned chaplain with a Master of Theological Studies (MTS). My work centers on the intersection of mental health, chronic illness, and spiritual care, with a particular focus on anxiety, sleep quality, and quality of life in individuals living with cardiovascular disease.
I currently serve as a teaching and research assistant at Florida State University, bringing prior research experience from Johns Hopkins and the University of South Florida. I’m skilled in cross-sectional survey analysis, quantitative methods, and integrating psychosocial and spiritual variables into nursing science.
My long-term goal is to secure a research-intensive faculty position, where I can continue building evidence-based models of care that treat the whole person, mind, body, and spirit.

Spiritual care for life’s uncertain seasons.
I’m Josef, Registered Nurse (RN), chaplain, Master of Theological Studies (MTS), and PhD student in Nursing Science. I specialize in supporting individuals at personal, spiritual, and emotional crossroads, especially those facing grief, stress, chronic illness, or major life transitions.
With a background in both clinical nursing and spiritual care, my approach blends evidence-based insight with theological reflection. My academic work focuses on anxiety, sleep, and quality of life in individuals with cardiovascular conditions, but at its heart, I’m drawn to the stories behind the data. That human connection drives everything I do.
Whether you're religious, spiritual but not religious, deconstructing, or simply seeking meaning, you are welcome here.
I’ve worked with veterans, caregivers, students, healthcare workers, and those navigating loss, identity shifts, or existential distress. My work is especially suited for:
People living with chronic illness
Caregivers and healthcare professionals
Individuals grieving or facing moral injury.
Those wrestling with questions of faith, purpose, or transition
I offer spiritually grounded, person-centered care that is:
Holistic – attending to body, mind, and spirit
Practical – informed by clinical knowledge and counseling techniques
Respectful – inclusive of all faith backgrounds and belief systems
My practice draws from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, logotherapy, Lectio Divina, and other integrative spiritual practices. I do not provide psychotherapy or medical treatment, but I will gladly refer you to licensed professionals when appropriate.
